PORT ST. LUCIE, Florida/April 11, 2016 – “Meditation is a well-known way to relieve stress, but Transcendental Meditation is a simple, natural technique that allows your body to settle into a state of rest and relaxation and achieve a state of inner peace,” says Jennifer Read Hawthorne, New York Times best-selling author, international inspirational speaker and editor. Hawthorne is co-author of seven books, including Chicken Soup for the Woman’s Soul and Chicken Soup for the Mother’s Soul, which continue to be among the most popular of all books in the Chicken Soup for the Soul series. She has a passion for anything that can make life easier and fuller and spoke to the Port St. Lucie Business Women about Transcendental Meditation (TM) at their April 6 meeting held at Tutto Fresco in St. Lucie West. She says that practicing TM on a daily basis not only reduces stress, but also improves concentration and boosts brain power.

TM is a form of mantra meditation. This technique was introduced by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, founder of the Transcendental Meditation program more than 50 years ago. According to Hawthorne, TM is the most widely researched meditation throughout the world, with more than 600 studies having been performed and scientifically verified.

The TM technique involves using a sound or mantra that is specific to the individual, and is practiced for 20 minutes twice a day. TM is a method for relaxation, stress reduction and self-actualization, a term coined by American psychologist Abraham Maslow. Self-actualization refers to self-fulfillment: we become and achieve our potential. Hawthorne pointed out that the longer one practices TM, the more permanent and long-term effects occur. During TM, all four lobes of the brain light up, indicating greater activity and participation of the whole brain.

Hawthorne is a certified teacher of Transcendental Meditation and has been practicing it for more than 40 years. For more information visit www.jenniferhawthorne.com.

She ended her talk with the following inspirational quote: “It’s impossible NOT to make a difference in the world around you. The only question is, what kind of difference do you want to make? It’s possible to be a shining light to everyone you come in contact with. What you radiate to the world through who you are is far more significant than anything you do.”
