Port St. Lucie Business Women member reveals passion for porcelain

Dorothy Kamm, a member of the Port St. Lucie Business Women since 2008, is known in the area as a public relations professional, award-winning writer, and community advocate, but who knew she was also an expert in the field of American painted porcelain?

At a recent Port St. Lucie Business Women meeting, Kamm took all of the members by surprise when she discussed her passion for hand-painted porcelain — so much so that she has authored three books: “Antique Trader’s Comprehensive Guide to American Painted Porcelain with Values,” “American Painted Porcelain Collectors Identification & Value Guide,” and “Painted Porcelain Jewelry & Buttons.”

An expert in the field, Kamm received her Master of Fine Arts from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and has served as consultant on four price guides. She has written dozens of articles and has lectured extensively on porcelain artistry and its history. In fact, Kamm is known as the premier source on American painted porcelain, and her writings are on file in the library of the National Museum of Women in the Arts, the leading research facility on women’s art.

In addition, Kamm has served as guest curator for several museum exhibits on American painted porcelain. Her hand-painted porcelain jewelry has been featured in Victoria and Traditional Home magazines. Kamm’s books are available online at amazon.com.

At each bi-weekly meeting of the Port St. Lucie Business Women, a member is invited to speak about herself so others can get to know her on a more personal level. How fitting that members learned this about Dorothy Kamm during March’s Women in History Month. She’s a true pioneer.

As a member of Port St. Lucie Business Women, where Kamm has served as the Public Relations chair since 2008 and is currently the Program chair, she said, “This is a great group of women who support each other, have fun together, assist women reach their educational goals at IRSC (Indian River State College) with scholarship awards, and help so many nonprofits in the community.”

For more than 35-years, Port St. Lucie Business Women have supported the successes of fellow St. Lucie County businesswomen. Meetings are held on the first and third Thursdays of each month at Tutto Fresco in St. Lucie West. Membership is by invitation and application. For more information, visit pslbw.com.
