Since its inception in 1980 the Port St. Lucie Business Women has incorporated as part of its mission to support women in the advancement of their education and of their careers. To date the Business Women has donated more than $90,000 to the Indian River State College Foundation through its annual scholarship awards from money raised in the organization’s spring Fashion Show, assuring the future of dozens of women. At its June 7 meeting, held at Tutto Fresco in Port St. Lucie, the Business Women presented scholarships to three outstanding candidates for the fall semester.
The Port St. Lucie Business Women/Kay Schaeffer Memorial Scholarship is an annual award of $2,500 for tuition and books to women who plan to attend, or are enrolled at, Indian River State College (IRSC). The Port St. Lucie Business Women’s Scholarship also is an annual award of $2,500 for tuition and books to a female student who currently is pursuing a bachelor’s degree at IRSC.
Marisol Aquilar is the recipient of the Port St. Lucie Business Women/Kay Schaeffer Memorial High School Scholarship. As the eldest of four siblings, Marisol developed a love for looking after children. Her dream is to become a pediatric nurse. She enjoyed volunteering through the Volunteen program at Lawnwood Regional Medical Center where she was awarded a Certificate of Appreciation for the most hours served. Marisol plans to enroll in IRSC’s Registered Nurse program.
Amanda McKenna has been awarded the Port St. Lucie Business Women/Kay Schaeffer Memorial Baccalaureate Scholarship. Amanda is pursuing her Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice at IRSC. Following graduation she plans to work as a private investigator, with the goal of ultimately opening her own agency. Amanda works full-time as a server at a local restaurant, completes 12 or more credits each semester, is completing training hours for several licenses needed for agency ownership, and is revving up to participate in a one-year internship with Spector Investigations in Fort Pierce.
Tabitha Crowe has been awarded the Port St. Lucie Business Women Scholarship for 2018 – 2019. She has a passion for both agriculture and education and plans to earn an Associate’s of Arts Degree in Secondary Education from IRSC, then a Bachelor’s Degree in Agriculture Education and Communication from the University of Florida. After completing her education, Tabitha plans to return to the Treasure Coast and become a high school agriculture teacher. Doing this will allow her to give back to the community that has done so much for her and her family.
